Finally: Yearbooks Have Arrived

They are hot off the press and waiting for you at Legacy Oaks. Again, Mrs. P and the journalism class extend our many apologies for the prolonged delay.

Also: it is not too late to purchase a yearbook despite earlier notices otherwise. Our minimum purchase was 100 books, and only around 70 were sold; thus, several are still available for purchase.

On an entirely unrelated note: It's great to see bloggers maintaining this site. Keep it up! People are reading it. My relatives halfway across the world in the Philippines actually perused your writing when I mentioned the blog. Have a great summer to all.

This movie is a non-stop action movie that has you on the edge of your seat with every bullet. the cast consest of

James McAvoy as Wesley Gibson: A meek 25-year-old who works in a cubicle. Gibson has a disloyal girlfriend and a boss who bullies him.McAvoy was cast in the lead role in October 2006. McAvoy, who had screen-tested for the role early in 2006, was initially rejected due to the studio seeking an actor that had conventional Hollywood leading-man looks and physique. The actor was later recalled, being considered the "runt of the litter" of those who tested. According to McAvoy, "They [ultimately] wanted someone geeky." The Scottish actor, who portrays an American in the film, trained for the film's action scenes.
Morgan Freeman as Sloan: The charismatic assassin partner of Wesley Gibson's deceased father.
Angelina Jolie as Fox: One of Fraternity assassins who mentors Gibson and serves as the love interest. Jolie was cast in March 2007 after screenwriter Dean Georgaris rewrote the screenplay to tailor the role for her.
Common as The Gunsmith: A professional gunman who trains others to use weapons.
Konstantin Khabensky as The Exterminator: Khabensky, who starred in Bekmambetov's Night Watch, was cast so the director would have a familiar face around Wanted.
Marc Warren as The Repairman
John Carmichael as The Butcher: A master of knife work who knows how to make an opponent bleed to death within minutes. He trains Wesley in the use of knives.
Terence Stamp as Pekwarsky: A master in the science of killing. Pekwarsky operates as a rogue agent outside of The Fraternity.
David O'Hara as Mr. X: Was possibly the one of the greatest assassins in the world. He was killed in a elaborate trap set up by Cross.

Infamous

Sucker Punch, a game designing company, has recently released new information on their latest game, Infamous. The game features a huge atmosphere in which the main character, Dylan, may explore to his heart's content. In the game, Dylan survives a massive explosion that engulfs the majority of his hometown, Empire City. Upon surviving the blast, Dylan discovers that he has been endowed with superhuman abilities. Now, what the player chooses to use Dylan's powers for is almost completely up to them. The gamer may use the powers to save civilians but not help themselves or vice-versa. This decision will cause the way that the general public perceives you. The graphics for the game are state of the art and the game play is said to be pretty solid. X-box 360 owners will be disappointed though, because the game will only be released on the PlayStation 3 console. Overall, the game well-rounded and seems as though it will do very well.

Summer Break

Smart Car - Smart Choice

The relatively new "Smart Car" may not look like a safe choice for the highway. However, a multitude of tests have been held deciding whether or not this car is safe; there are many videos of these tests on the internet. These videos show that the Smart Car causes less damage to the car and or wall it is crashing in to, and less damge to the Smart Car itself. According to designers, Smart Car is only 8.2 feet long, less than 5 feet wide; it gets nearly 70 miles to the gallon while driving on the highway. This car is relatively cheap, too, making it one of the most driver friendly cars on the market. On top of all that, the new Smart Car has the cool, sleek style of a sports car, and you can almost park two of them into a single parking space. It has also been dubbed "Eco-Friendly" by GreenPeace. Altogether, the Smart Car may be the single most "relative" car of the decade.

Is Gears of War 2 Too Violent?

Lately, the gaming industry has been pumping out games that some would consider inappropriate for children and now they may have gone too far. Microsoft's upcoming game Gears of War 2 is said to be the most violent game that will be on the market and some countries may be fighting back. Germany for one is not allowed the first Gears of War to be sold in their country and will, most likely, not allow the sequel to be sold as well. Other countries are considering this as well. So, why all the hubbub about one game? The game not only has state-of-the-art graphics, but is also presents even more gruesome kills, blood, and even more profanity. Some are saying that even in the U.S. the 17+ rating may not be enough and that Microsoft will have to revise their game before it will be allowed to be sold in stores.

Ticket Brokers

Because the Police are cracking down on ticket scalpers, who buy and sell concert or sports tickets, scalpers are making there move on a different approach in selling tickets. Many of them are now calling themselves "ticket brokers" and have moved their business from the street, to the world wide web. These ticket brokers buy every single ticket that the official ticket sellers have, literally seconds after they can start buying them. This makes it completely impossible for anyone else to buy the tickets. After they buy them, they post them on their website, selling them for up to triple profit. This has made it extremely hard for some sports fans or even concert-goers to go to a game or concert, because the prices have just gone too high. The only logical things we, the ticket buyers, can do is either wait these guys out and hope for a new system so they cannot buy tickets in such large quantities or start a boycott.

Everyone knows that the Internet is very popular; but just how much are people willing to spend to own a website? The website name, or, domain name bomb.com has recently gone on sale for over $60,000 dollars. The sad thing is that this is not even the highest price paid for a domain name. Business.com recently went for $7.5 million dollars. Businesses will pay this much because they know that catchy and simple domain names will be easy for people to remember and, therefore, easier to market, which leads to more money. I guess the philosophy here would be "You have to spend money to make money."

Is The Polar Bear The Next Dodo Bird?

Over the past few years the discussion of global warming has been a hot topic in the government. According to animal protection agencies the Arctic sea water is not freezing over for as long and as far as it used to and this is due to global warming. If so, global warming is affecting many animals and also putting them at risk to becoming endangered or extinct. Among these animals is the polar bear. It relies on the Arctic sea to freeze over in order for it to go out every winter and catch large amounts of food so it can survive the summer. For whatever reason, the sea is not freezing with the quality it used to and numbers of polar bears has slowly dropped until now it is being considered an endangered species. Experts are saying that in the near future it is even possible that they will become extinct if the proper precautions are not taken to preserve their species.

For all you avid Eragon fans, The Inheritance cycle was initially planned to be a trilogy. In an October 30, 2007 press release, Paolini revealed that the third book would have been so large that it would need to be published in two volumes. An April 11, 2008 newsletter sent out by Paolini alluded that this book will be longer than either Eragon or Eldest. Brisingr is scheduled to be released on September 20, 2008; release outside the United States will follow. you can pre-order your copy online or any book stre around your town. Book four's release date is unknown.
Regarding the title, Paolini said, "'Brisingr' is one of the first words I thought of for this title, and it’s always felt right to me.” “As the first ancient-language word that Eragon learns, it has held particular significance for his legacy as a Dragon Rider. In this new book, it will be revealed to be even more meaningful than even Eragon could have known. "Brisingr" is the Ancient Language word for "fire", used to summon and control fire by magic-users in the series.
The cover, featuring the gold dragon Glaedr, was illustrated by John Jude Palencar. The content of the cover was one of the few things initially confirmed by Paolini. The cover was to feature an emerald-green dragon looking to the right. However, Paolini later indicated that this was affected by the expansion of the series to a four-book cycle, but did not explain the change at the time.

Hurricane in Burma

Recently, the country of Myanmar, or Burma, was hit by a devastating hurricanes that has ripped through the country and caused massive amounts of damage. The cyclone killed many but even more are sitll suffering because the Burmese government refuse to allow aid workers to enter the country. So far, well over 29,000 people have been reoprted dead and thousands more reprted missing. The villages in Burma can not get fresh water due to the fact that all the wells and other water sources have been contaminated by the dead bodies and spilled chemicals. There is discussion amoungst the U.N. to forcfully send aid workers into Burma; regardless of if the government will allow it. Without aid from the U.N. the future of the already troubled Burma looks even bleaker.

Nearly 19,000 killed in China Earthquake

Almost 19,000 Chinese residents have been killed due to a registered 7.9 earthquake in the Sichuan province. Many rescuers are overwhelmed with the amount of people injured and dead. Thousands of troops have been sent to China. According to CNN, this is the absolute worst disaster China has seen in 30 years. Not only did the earthquake devastate them, but the aftershocks following the earthquake were just as bad. Overall, China is in need of a lot of help and prayer.

Gears of War 2

Gears of War 2 is a third-person shooter video game in development by Epic Games and to be published by Microsoft Game Studios exclusively for the Xbox 360. It is the sequel to the critically acclaimed best-seller Gears of War, and was announced by lead designer Cliff Bleszinski during the 2008 Game Developers Conference on February 20, 2008. It is currently scheduled for release in November 2008 and will use a heavily upgraded version of the Unreal Engine 3 (A state of the art gaming engine). The cover story in the May 2008 issue of Game Informer revealed several new gameplay features. Players can now play on individual co-op play settings. One player may, for instance, play on Casual while the teammate plays on Hardcore. A "communal combat system" will adapt to give a player at a lower difficulty an equivalently fair challenge at the player at higher difficulty. The player will be able to maintain multiple save files that work with the drop-in/drop-out co-op features. There will also be a fourth difficulty level that is a level below Casual; senior producer Rod Fergusson admitted that — for the first game — "We overshot on [the Casual] difficulty and a game that was a little harder than we intended." Several unique weapons will be included in the game as well. Overall, this game will be an exciting and state-of-the-art video game with a solid storyline and jaw-dropping graphics. This title is going to be so amazing that it is sure to put the gaming community in awe.

Dancing and fun was the atmosphere at the first LOCS prom. Overall prom was a huge success, students partied and had lots of fun. It was great to see a whole other side of people as they dressed to their best. There was food and music, and even romance in the air. Even many of the chaperone's had fun, both guys and girls got low on the dance floor. Many bonds were formed and memories made. At the end of the night, it was a bit sad to leave; however, it was a memorable event.

Grand Theft Auto iv is one of the newest games, parents this is a M rated game which means you must be 17 years or older to play this game. although there is violent and harsh language it is a very good game. the plot is that you are a Siberian immigrant that was per swayed by his cousin to come to America but the the twist happens and to find out what that is then I guess you should go buy it. But around all that stuff the GTA has been around for 11 years and the gameplay has changed from game to game.

Prom is this Saturday and atmosphere is exciting and over whelming. There is talk about dates and flowers and more. The common color dress for LOCS is a black, so black dresses are in this season for the first at LOCS. We are hoping that the memories are going to be unforgettable. This week, Mrs. Padovani, the Art teacher, and Ms. Schoolfield have organized a full blown Art Fair. All LOCS students, along with anyone else who wants to come, can attend the Art Fair. It is currently being held in the cafeteria and LOCS will be holding an Open House on April 15th at 6:30 PM to display most of the Art students' artwork. On April 14th, all of the LOCS students were given a work sheet on which they had to chose one piece of artwork and write about it. The ages of the artists submitting their art ranges from four or five to over forty years old. Overall, this Art Fair has taken alot of planning, and alot hard work; we're hoping for the best!

Bridge building contest is over!

It has been a week since our bridge building contest. All of the entries did very well. There were many different designs. For grammar school this was a fun project, but for high school this counted as a grade. Along with building the bridge, the high school had to write a technical report which was due one week later Friday April, 11.

We did have a two amazing bridges that held all of the weight that the teachers had on it.

The Toothpicks boy's bridge withstood all of bricks weight. On Monday of the next week this bridge held 129 lbs. before the brige rig for holding the weight broke.

Just like the toothpick boys, team Chicken Flavored Vegtables with stood all of the weight of the bricks. On Monday of the next week this bridge held 132 lbs. before the team decided to take the weight off because they had held the most weight and wanted to keep their bridge.

Because the high school will attend a prom, the student council decided to do something for middle school. The Legacy Oaks middle school will organize a LOCK-IN! All week, they have sold water and wristbands for $2.00 in order to obtain money for food and activities. Jabbawockeez Take the Title

As an update to the previous post, Jabbawockeez took the title as America's Best Dance Crew. "They had more finesse [than the other crew]," commented Jonathan Stewart, avid fan on the show.

The next major dance show to look forward to is Fox's "So You Think You Can Dance," which airs during the summer.

This show has put the art of dance to a new level like American Idol did for singing. The show's dance crews put their hearts in to their challenges. The crews consist of
Iconic, BreakSk8, Enigma Dance Kru, Automatic Response, The Movement, Femme 5, Full Out, Fysh 'n' Chicks, Status Quo, Live in Color, JabbaWockeeZ, Kaba Modern. They are in the 8th week of the show and there are only 2 crews left: JabbaWockeeZ from the West Coast, and Status Quo from the East Coast. Both crews are audience favorites. The judges love both crews and the unique styles they bring to the stage. Everything will be duked out on March 30, 2008 to see who wins.

Based on the best selling books, The Chronicles of Narnia continues. The newest one, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, due out May 16, spans about one year in our time and 1,300 years in Narnia's time. A young prince uses Susan's (oldest sister from the first movie) horn to call the children back to Narnia. With their help, Prince Caspain will try to regain his rightful throne. Economics Project

During the 4th quarter, the Economics class will do what sounds like a very educational and enjoyable experience that will involve all the students in LOCS. In this project, they will each manage their own small business around the school. They can choose if they would like to form a partnership with a fellow classmate as well. This project will start May 1st, and each class member will be selling their own product or service. They will receive their start-up funds from a selected parent or friend; however, they will have to pay them back. They are currently in the planning stages and are having an experienced business man come and speak with them next week. All together, the students in economics class, and even the students who aren't, are very excited about this upcoming project.

Whats Out Now in Theaters

Many movies have come out in the past few weeks which appeal to all audiences. Many people would be scared to take their children to the theater for fear of inappropriate themes. But at the same time, no one likes to take there child to a "safe" movie because normally they are very boring for the parent. So if you want to enjoy your time with the kids and have something to talk about I would recommend "Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who. This movie is about the imaginative elephant, Horton. He hears a cry for help coming from a tiny speck of dust floating through the air. Suspecting there may be life on that speck and despite a surrounding community which thinks he has lost his mind, Horton is determined to help. It is a rated G movie with a great plot. And its excellence has shown with great ratings from users and critics. Horton Hears a Who!

Upcoming Prom

Legacy Oaks Christian School 9th-12th graders are having an upcoming prom. The date is set for April 26, 2008 and almost all the girls have their dresses picked out, at home, and they are just counting the days to wear them. Waiting for the formal prom, every high schooler still has to buy tickets, which are being sold next week (Tuesday 4/1/08 and Thursday 4/3/08) during advisory. And Micah O. is begging for Burger King instead of pasta.

Army of Two Rocks!

Army of Two is one of the newest co-op games out. The A.I. is awesome, neither Bungie nor Rockstar could have made a game in the same fashion. Even though it uses mild language, this game has a sweet plot. From the action to communication it is a five star, two thumbs up game. If you have not got it, go get it. You will not regret it.

Drillbit Taylor

Drillbit Taylor is an action packed comedy about two boys struggling through high school. Their main concern is a bully who picks on them relentlessly throughout the movie. The boys get fed up with the way they are being treated, so they hire a bodyguard to help deal with their bully problems. That bodyguard is Drillbit Taylor. The movie is exciting, funny, and has a storyline that many teenagers can relate to. The combination of those three things makes this a great movie and I recommend it for anyone over the age of 13.

The Yearbook is Finally Done

After many painstaking hours in the classroom, the Legacy Oaks Yearbook Staff is finally done with the yearbook. The yearbook was sent in Monday, March 31st and we should receive them at the end of the school year. Journalism has worked long and hard on this yearbook, looking back on everything that has happened this year. We can't wait to see just how it will turn out.

Thanks to all who helped put it together -- from teachers and parents sending in pictures and the Parent Teacher Fellowship giving us the money needed to finish. Most of all, the entire Journalism class, especially Mrs. Pacetti, for without her there would have never been a Journalism class.

Brett Favre Says Goodbye

Earlier this year, the NFL's all-time leading touchdown passer, Brett Favre, retired. His retirement, although expected, came at a rather unusual time. The Packers went all the way to the NFC title game and lost to the eventual Superbowl champions, the New York Giants. The Packers went 13-3 this past season. They were one of the hottest teams last season, so it is unusual for him to leave.

Brett Favre's departure hurts. The team now has to go with an inexperienced quarterback under center. It could also hurt their young receivers. A running game that struggled for much of the season, until the emergence of Ryan Grant could see many 8 man fronts next season. Legacy Oaks Gives In

The Legacy Oaks Christian School boys basketball team, unfortunately, did not win a game this season. throughout the year, they have played San Jose' Catholic School, Covenant Christian, and San Marcos Baptist Academy. In the middle of the season, the basketball team got a little extra help from their new assistant coach, Gabe Brooks (Mrs. Brooks' son).
Even though they did not do that great this season, they are planning on doing much better next season.

New Sports Cars for the New Year

As New Year's Day has come and gone, new sports cars have been released such as the Alfa Romeo 8 Competizione, which is a new Italian sports car.

The car with the most horsepower is the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, which has
620 horsepower. These cars are made from many sports car businesses.

If you're looking for a fast car and you have a lot of cash, I would recommend the Chevy Corvette and NOT the BMW M3, which has 306 horsepower. So this is the new sports cars of 2008 if you want to see more click this.

New Hampshire Primaries

New Hampshire polls opened on January 8 , 2008 at 12:00 midnight. Presidential candidates traveled all overNew Hampshire to spread the word and get people voting. One primary was held at Brookside Congregational Church in Manchester where at least 50 voters were lined up before dawn. Some of the candidates showed up at the church to try to persuade voters in their favor or to see how the compitition was doing.

Most of the candidates had high hopes for New Hampshire, as Guliani demonstrated by a comment, "The only poll I'm interested in is the one that goes on in there," he said, pointing to Brookeside.

One thing is for certain though,the polls in New Hampshire are definitely going to set the curve for the rest of the presidential race.

Flu cases on the rise

According to the Austin American Statesman, doctors have been seeing many more cases of the flu in Texas. Doctors say the probable reason for the influx of flu activity is due to the fact that school is starting back up and more people are coming in contact with each other. Many doctors are recommending that you receive flu shots, increase your intake of vitamin C and zinc, and use the flu preventant called Tamiflu in order to avoid the flu this season. Clinics are running low on shots, but some grocery stores and pharmacies are offering flu shots.

Recent Recital

Last weekend the LOCS musical community gathered together to perform in the recital. There was a wide range of musical instruments: violin, acoustic guitar, and the piano. All the grammar school kids were required to play the violin, but for the high school it was an elective. Most of the kids played the violin, but there were two pianists and three guitarists. Every participant in the recital worked very hard to learn their instruments and for many of the students it was their first year to play the violin. The pianists were led by Mrs. Pacetti and the violinists and guitars were led by Ms. Yoder. Everyone did very well and there were very few mistakes made.

The Golden Compass - Flop

The Golden Compass is the story of a young girl who is following her "destiny" and runs into many problems along the way. As expected, the movie received terrible reviews, scoring a 2.8 out of 5. Comments like "Just plain bad", and "The holiday equivalent to a lump of coal," flooded the user review section of Autin360.com. According to the Austin-American Statesman, "The film tried transparently to replicate the cash-box fomula, 'The Lord of the Rings,' but it was so cleary not up to the task." In the eyes of many Christians, the movie was not good because it appeared that it was attempting to bash their religion.

Rockband

EA, Harmonix, and MTV collaborated in order to make a musical simulation game. This type of game was introduced in "Guitar Hero," which only included playing a fake guitar that was plugged into your gaming console. Rockband has added two new instruments: drums and a microphone. The new instruments are expensive but are worth the money in the long run. If you are a social person you can join up with your friends and up to four people can play at the same time. The game is available on the Xbox 360, and the Playstation 2 and 3. The Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 versions allow online game play and downloadable content, but the Playstation 2 version does not not allow either of these features. With the holidays approaching, this will be a hot item for any future gaming musician.

Finding Your Voice

In the midst of trying to fit in with our peers and trying to get along with everyone, people tend to lose their identities. Although all of us were made in one image --God-- when we look around, there are no two people that look alike. Each person is unique and different in their own special way. Being like everyone else takes away from your personality and special nature.

Our writing styles, art, and dressing manner are all different. Our skin colors, height, and weight, but is it such a big deal that we discriminate? No, being different is the best thing in the world; it sets you apart from everyone else. There are two main types of people: the leaders and the followers. Which do you want to be? Don't be afraid to be different; it is a wonderful thing, for God has given each and everyone of us a gift and we should use it. Be bold and find your own voice, and when you do, don't let it go!

LOCS Volunteers

The LOCS book fair so far has been a big success. The journalism class has shown great character and responsibility concerning volunteering and helping Mrs. Randol out. Although Mrs. Randol is a great organizer, it was a lot of work for one person to do, so the journalism students stepped up. It's nice to know that the students of LOCS will lend a hand when needed.

North Korean Christians arrested; staus unknown.

Legacy Oaks Gives Back

Most kids in Austin, Texas are excited about what they are going to receive for Christmas, but for some kids they spend their Christmas worrying about keeping warm. Legacy Oaks is participating in a drive called Coats for Kids that gives children in the Austin Area coats for winter. The results of the drive were successful. Now, many more kids will be nice 'n toasty this winter.

Legacy is also giving back to SafePlace. SafePlace is an organization that "exists to end sexual and domestic violence through safety, healing, prevention, and social change." Legacy has a Christmas tree in the lobby. But instead of ornaments, the tree is decorated with scarves, mittens, hats, and gloves. The tree is a reminder to all who visit Legacy that we can make a difference in our city, no matter how big or small. SafePlace also has a wish list for their Christmas that includes...

PreK Today

Among the many students of our school, the youngest are working on some very special projects. They are currently learning songs and getting ready for Carestone as well as the Christmas Program. The students just started both Mandarin and Spanish, and are studying bears and sign language. For Christmas they will be working on mangers made of graham crackers. Their teacher, Mrs. Puryear, said, "They are a wonderful class and are working really hard."

What a smart bunch of students. We look forward to their upcoming projects and achievements.

Legacy Oaks Gives In

Five seconds left in the game, Legacy down by twenty eight points. Buzzzz! Time's up as the Lions' JV team lose their first game of the season, 54 to 26 against the Christian Covenant Wariors on December 4.

This loss for them was not one to be worried about for it was expected, considering they played against a varsity team.

Just as the streak against the Legacy JV team had taken its toll, it seemed all the same for our middle school team as they suffered for the second time in a row a 35+ point loss. These losses can be blamed on the consistent miscommunication between the players.

However, they do see the light, and improvement is present. This improvement has been shown

at the last game on December 17, in which they lost in style with a final score being 49 to 23

LSU VS. Ohio State

When LSU lost for the second time in triple overtime against an unranked team, it seemed that the Arkansas Razorbacks were going to end their chances at the National championship . BUT NOT NOW SON! After Mizzouri lost to Oklahoma and West Virginia lost to Pittsburgh, LSU and Ohio State took the no.1 and no.2 spots.

This will be the second consecutive year Ohio state has gone to the National Championship. Last year they went and got beat by the Florida Gators. They will likely make a repeat performance. Ohio state has yet to beat anyone of any importance this season whereas LSU has beaten the likes of Florida and Virginia Tech, both top ten teams at the time.

For all the hype in this game there is one important fact to note. Neither team is undefeated. For the first time in the history of the BCS two non-undefeated teams will play for the National Champioship. Even though ths season has been proof that the BCS should be discarded and a playoff should be made, this years championship game should be one to remember.

Book Fair

Monday, December 10th will be the kick off for the Legacy Oaks Book Fair. Books will range from ages in PreK and will go all the way up to adults. There will be books to fulfill all interests, including genres like fiction, non-fiction, some poetry and specially requested Bionicle.

Hours from Monday to Friday will be 7:30 to 8:00 am with the exception of Wednesday which will be open till 6:00 pm, so that adults may shop for their children. The rest of the weekdays, students will have opportunities to shop during study halls and lunch, as well as library time. We look forward to seeing you there!

Toys to Avoid for Christmas!

This picture may look familiar to some of you, but what you may not know is that this is listed on W.A.T.C.H's [World Against Toys Causing Harm] '10 Worst Toys'. The "Aqua Dots" have been found,when swallowed, the child can slip into a coma state. according the the W.A.T.C.H web site [http://www.toysafety.org/worstToyList_index.html] there have been two reports of kids slipping into this state after swallowing a few of the Aqua Dots.

Here is the complete list of the '10 worst toys':

1) Sticky Stones- can attach to inside of the body if swallowed. Causing intestinal perforation, infection of blockage which can be fatal.

2) Jack Sparrow's Spinning Dagger (Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean) -

This toy has spinning action at a push of a button, but the company has failed to label the warning of serious eye and other impact injuries.

3) Go Diego Go Animal Rescue Boat- The paint on the toy has excessive levels of lead. Exposure to this neurotoxin can have serious long-term effects, particularly for children.

4) Dora the Explorer Lamp- Although the lamp comes with a warning stating the usual "keep out of reach of children to avoid electrical shock and burn injuries," and also extra precaution telling children to UN-plug when the lamp is unattended or if the child is going to bed, there have still been reported injuries.

5) Lil "Giddy Up" Horse: Sassy Pet Sacks- This rocking horse has handles (like on a purse) that allows you to take it with you. The bag has small wooden beads that could cause a choking hazard for young kids. The hourse states that the toy is sold for newborns but the bag says not for children younger than eighteen months.

6) Spider Man 3 New Goblin Sword- This sword can extend 3 feet long in a matter of seconds. This may cause facial injuries and impact injuries.

7) Hip Hoppa- There is a platform on top of a ball that you use to jump on like a pogo stick. This toy can cause head or other impact injuries.

8) B'loonies Party Pack- You are to take a small ball of the plastic substance out of the tubes, put it on the end of the pipe and make all kids of bubble shapes. The plastic substance inside of the tubes have chemicals in them that are dangerous if swallowed. It can also cause burns on the person's skin.

9) My Little Baby Born- This is a soft baby doll for toddlers to enjoy and cuddle. There is a choking hazard for this doll, a pacifier that is attached to the baby's clothing.

10) Rubber Band Shooter- This toy's title explains just what it is: a rubber band shooter. This could be potential for eye injuries.

Theater Class

LOCS has added many new electives this year and one happens to be the theater class. The class is led by Mrs. Randol, who is also the school librarian, and it is going well so far.

Recently, the class started a report on the history of theater and each student will write about a different subject. The students will write about the following: costumes, the basic progression of theater throughout the ages, Shakepeare's works, and a few more.

The drama class is also preparing for a day-long presentation: the students have picked a character, researched their character, and will spend one day dressed and acting as the character that they chose. When asked about the class, Jonathan S. and Micah O. said that it was hard.

Drama class will also be reading, as one would guess, dramatically in the Christmas performance. In all, this class is a benefit to the school and is definitely a great addition to the electives at LOCS.

What's Going on in First and Second Grade?

"Deck the halls with Bows of Holly, Fa la la la la la la la la", sings the 1st & 2nd graders as they practice for caroling at the nursing home, Carestone, on December 11th.

In addition to caroling with the Legacy Oaks choir, this season they will also be collecting cans of food and warm clothing such as scarves, gloves, and hats for the homeless and needy people of Austin. But Mrs. Slockett's class isn't stopping there, they are reaching out to children in other countries who are going through hard times and need prayer. The 1st& 2nd graders received a multi-colored bracelet to help them remember to pray for the troubled children.

Book review

Eragon is a great book written by Christoper Paolini when he was only 15. The books are about a young boy that finds a dragon egg. But little does he know that there is a big plan for his destiny. Throughout the book he makes moves that could eventually destroy him in the end. He makes new friends like the Varden, Murtagh, Nasuada, Hrothgar, Orik, Trianna, Elva, Ajihad, The Twins, and Jörmundur. And then some of them turned out to be evil, but you have to read to find out which ones where not with him.

In this book there are a lot of things you have to find out, so do not just read through it with out really understanding it. It really is good to understand the book, and why Paolini chose them. SO, really get into it because it is an excellent book.

Music Review

The band Thousand Foot Krutch (TFK) is a nice Christian alternative to non-Christian bands such as Red Hot Chili Peppers or Green Day. The Band is full blown Christian Rock but it gets its roots from Hip-Hop which creates a nice blend of the two styles and makes a pleasant type of music.

If you are interested in looking into this band you might want to purchase their new CD, "The Flame in All of Us." Most of their songs speak of how we need and should want God. They believe in focusing on the hope factor and producing an experience anyone can enjoy.

Upper School's Wish List

This week, we asked the Upper School what they would like for Christmas. Needless to say, we received some pretty extravagant and far-fetched answers. Their requests spread from football to clothing, anything goes. Micah O., a die-hard Cowboy fan came up with a considerably predictable answer, "The Dallas Cowboys Franchise." Another football related request came from Jonathan S., who said he wanted a "Green Bay Packers Away Jersey," apparently, the home jersey is less desirable.

Brock B. came up with a pretty unique request; however, "$2,000 worth of clothing and shoes." Surprisingly, Brock was perfectly fine with his answer being published. As predicted, the iPod is still the #1 request throughout all of the Upper School; it's even rumored that confiscated iPods are our teacher's #1 request. Overall, our students are very excited about our upcoming Christmas break and cannot wait until those special "sleep-in 'til eleven o' clock" mornings.

The Christmas Store

The Legacy Oaks economics class is going to host the Christmas store this year. They will have toys, houseware items, and tools. They bought everything already; however, they need donations: wrapping paper and volunteers to help wrap gifts. Wrapping your purchases will not cost extra.

The store will be open on the 19Th and the 20Th. There will be a preview of the store on the 18Th. The items will range from 1 to 10 dollars and there will be no tax. (What a bargain!)

4th Grade - What's going on?

The fourth grade is up to a lot this season. Recently, Matt B. and Avery F. interviewed the fourth grade about what's been going on in their classroom. Last week, they all worked together to dye cloth only using berries. They were all very excited about this project and had a ton of fun. Recently, the fourth grade has switched teachers. After interviewing them, Avery found that they all like Mrs. Brown and enjoy her up-beat teaching. Later Avery asked them what their favorite subject was and why. Joshua M. said his favorite subject was math; he added that is was easy and fun. Reading is Caroline G.'s favorite subject. She said that reading could take you anywhere, or allow you to be anyone you wanted to be. From what we heard, the fourth grade is having a lot of fun and experiencing an eventful holiday season.

Third Grade Looks Bright

There are many new faces at Legacy Oaks this year. One of those wonderful new faces is Mrs. Brooks. Mrs. Brooks teaches third grade this year. Mrs. Brooks teaches nine students and this is her first year teaching at Legacy Oaks, although she has been a teacher for a long time. Mrs. Brooks says that the best part of her job is the kids.

For the 3rd grade's holiday activities, they made butter, and Iroquoian long houses. A good incentive Mrs. Brooks thought of is the Marble Jar. To receive marble's the children have to have good behavior. For each good deed a student does, they get to put one marble in the jar. When the Marble Jar is filled about halfway they receive a party.

Mrs. Brooks commented on how the class was not doing to well in math at the beginning of the year, but recently they have started to really enjoy it and make better grades. Mrs. Brooks' goal for the year is to have as much fun as possible.

In conclusion, the third grade's year is likely to be fun filled and very educational.

The K5 Kool Kids

The Legacy Oaks K5 class is rockin' and rollin' as they learn how to read. Ms. Larson's goal for the K5 class is to get them reading at a first grade level. That has to be tough, but if there is any K5 class that can get it done, it is this one. Some of the kids are even reading stories to Ms. Larson.

Reading is not the only thing the K5 Kool Kids will be learning. Next on the agenda is the Arctic and it is going to be awesome. Polar bears, lemmings, and wolves, oh my! That will be a treat.

Work isn't the only thing the K5 Kool Kids are doing. They have been going on several field trips to a lot of "kool" places. They went to H.E.B. where they got free food. They also went to the pumpkin patch (which was their favorite) and the Austin Duck Tours. Later on in the year, the librarian Mrs. Randol wants to take them to the tree farm.

5th - 6th grade

The 5th-6th grade class is currently working on some projects for Thanksgiving. According to Ms . R ., the 5th-6th grade teacher, on November 20, 2007, their class is going to watch a movie, William Bradford and the First Thanksgiving. Also, they will be participating in a few activities that are about the video. Additionally, the class is going to throw a Thanksgiving party.

Over the Christmas season they are going to have many activities, including the following: a Christmas party, Christmas ornaments, and a “Secret Santa.”

Ms. R. has recently joined the LOCS staff. In an interview with her,she said that it was a challenging transition but the kids are great. We asked her if she had any more fun activities planned with the class and she told us she would like to plan more field trips in the future.

Student Organized Social: BIG SUCCESS!

Most students are sad about the end of summer, but Legacy Oaks Christian School is happy to say Goodbye, Summer; Hello, Fall. On Friday, November 2nd, LOCS Student Leaders hosted a Goodbye, Summer; Hello, Fall social for the upper school students. It was a fun filled afternoon with games including bubblegum pie, seed spitting, shaving the balloon, water balloons, and a shaving cream fight. Afterwards students enjoyed a barbecue dinner provided by Miss Yoder.

We interviewed some of the students and Miss Yoder. Miss Yoder said, " Yes, I think it went very well. The students that were there, I think, had fun. It was a lot of work but a lot of fun."

Another student, junior Liny commented, "It was fun, but there should have been more people. The games were good and they were creative. The shaving cream fight was insane in a good way, but the water balloons should have been real water balloons. The student leaders did a great job."

Sophomore Micah O. said, "It was fun." Sophomore Brock B. said, "It was cool. I think it should have been organized better, and there should have been towels."
Junior high students Avery F. and Melissa L. said, "I think there could have been more people [but] I think it was fun", and "It was really fun and messy."

Overall, everyone had a good time and the afternoon went smoothly.

Door Closes on Lady Lion's Winning Season

Great players make for a great season for the Legacy Oaks volleyball team, as they have gone for 6 wins and 3 losses. The Lady Lions have already beaten San Marcos Baptist Academy, Not Your Ordinary School (NYOS), two home school teams known as the Stars and the Cougars , Christian Covenant, and Austin City School. Even though the Lady Lions beat the Stars in a scrimmage once, the second and third time they played, the Lions were beat.

All in all, the Legacy Oaks volleyball team did amazingly well this season, and they hope to continue this dominance with next year's co-ed team. But with the season coming to a end some tears are heard crying out.

Upcoming Music Recital

This December, many LOCS students will be participating in the Christmas music recital. The musicians will be playing a smaller version of "The Messiah", by George Handel. The 7-12 graders will each have a specific part in the recital; a few of the instruments will include the piano and the violin. Miss Yoder and Mrs. Pacetti's students will be performing in the recital on December 15, at the Carestone Nursing home.

After interviewing two participants of the recital, Sam B. and Alex G., we found that they are very excited and have been preparing for a few weeks. Alex G. said, "I have been in a recital, and I like the fact that everyone will be playing together and the audience will be there." Sam added that he was slightly nervous, but overall, he is looking forward to the recital. According to previous performances, the recital is predicted to turn out very well.

The Bells and Whistles of Tinkertoys

This month we will be covering all the bells and whistles of Mrs. Jasper's Tinkertoys class. This will include the class' ongoing Rube Goldberg project and its processes. Interviews and photos will also be featured.

Rube Goldberg was an inventor, cartoonist and sculptor; he had a degree in engineering. His cartoon drawing eventually evolved into his invention ideas -- machines and contraptions which are still evolving and progressing to this day.

Mrs. Jasper's Tinkertoys class is currently working on a project of this sort. The project includes ten steps to raise a flag. In an interview with Mrs. Jasper she said,

"[Tinkertoys] is really about basic physics. We have explored simple machines, electricity, and flight... We are currently doing the Rube Goldberg -- ten steps to raise a flag." Mrs. Jasper also said that the project will be finished this month. The upcoming project remains a mystery.

Students such as senior Kat B. had shared their opinions about the project. "It's a long daunting task, " she said. "It's very interactive and fun. There is a light at the end of the tunnel."

Sam B. from the group called "Fantastic Four" told us, "It's long. You have to be creative."

Richard N. from the "Three Musketeers" group told us that it's difficult to raise the flag using different steps. Jacob M. revealed that pre-trials will be held Thursday, November 15, and actual trials will be held the next Thursday. Overall, although it is a time consuming task the benefits and experience seem worth it.

What's Happening in the Grammar School?

Our teachers in Pre-K are really great in their way to get the four year old children on task. The students are learning sign language, art, music, Spanish and most of all how to have fun.

Grammar school grades include K4-6th grade. Some of the classes special classes their students take are Spanish, Mandarin, Latin.

What's Happening in 5th?

They will be finishing the following in November: In grammar, the 5th graders are learning Common and Proper nouns. In math they are studying fractions. In history, they are studying the Middle East.

What about 6th?

In the month of November the 6th grade will be doing the following: in grammar they are finishing Prepositions. In math, they are studying decimals and ratios. In history, just as the 5th grade, they are studying the Middle East.

For both classes they are having a Thanksgiving party on the 20th of the month.

Halo

The Halo games started in 1999 and ended in 2007. For those who do not know, Halo is an RPG (role playing game). This is what one would call a first person shooter. The game was created by Bungie and sponsored by Microsoft.

The first Halo game came out in 2000 and it received game of the year in 2002. Halo was then followed by 2 sequels, Halo 2 and Halo 3.

Halo 2 was released in the summer of 2004. It sold over 30 thousand copies in the first day alone.

Halo 3 was released in September this year. It made over $300 million dollars in the first week. In some cities, the lines to get in the stores that were selling Halo 3 at midnight were multiple blocks long.

Bungie is the company that started the Halo legacy; it has been sponsored by Microsoft ever since the Halo was made. But now Bungie has decided to split from Microsoft in order to develop as a company on its own. Although Bungie has split from Microsoft, the games that they are currently working on will still be available for Microsoft's X-box 360.

Some of the students here at L.O.C.S have played all the three Halos and we interviewed them. Brock B. states that,"It is an awesome multi-player shooting game." He went on to say, "On a scale of 1 to 10, I would give it a 9 because of the intense action..." We also interviewed Matt B., a 9th grader from LOCS, who said, "I thought the games were really good because of the good multi player and campaign."

Although the games have received great ratings, all three of the games have a "Mature" rating, meaning one must be 17 to buy it and there is a lot of blood and violence. Needless to say, many parents will not buy their children any of the three Halos.

Aside from the concerned parents of children, nothing is holding the Halo series from becoming one of the most profitable game series ever.

Student Council Starts Soon

For the first time ever, Legacy Oaks Christian School will have a student council. The elections will begin soon, but no specifications have been made. Many students are excited about the elections and are anticipating them greatly. We should thank Miss Yoder who is the teacher organizing this event. The election date will be Tuesday, November 20, 2007.

Ms. Yoder said, "We are excited to form our first student council at Legacy Oaks. It will be a great way for students to have discussion with faculty and the school board."
